Project #15377

Empowering urban refugees in Nairobi.

by Xavier Project

Xavier Project exists to provide opportunities to urban refugees in Kenya and Uganda who are otherwise excluded from the means to live fulfilled and dignified lives. Through a holistic approach to development urban refugees will be able to take back control of their lives and make a positive change to their communities. Through education refugees can find work to become self-sufficient, our livelihoods programme promotes their economic stability, and through media we are giving refugees a voice.

According to UNHCR there are 60,000 refugees living in Nairobi. They do not have access to basic services such as education and health. Most are financially vulnerable as they are unable to gain work permits. As a result, 67% of refugee children cannot afford to attend secondary school. In line with this we aim to promote better access to education to help them take back control of their lives and make a positive change, whether in their new community or in their country of origin.

Xavier Project sponsors refugee children to study at government boarding schools. These offer the most conducive learning environment as many children's families cannot afford to pay for food or electricity at home. During the holidays we organise extra-curricular activities to supplement their formal education. This includes sports activities and music coaching, as well as community service and social media courses. We also put on language classes for those who don't speak English or Swahili.

Long-Term Impact

The project will pay for 25 refugees from the most poor and vulnerable families to go to secondary school. These families have escaped from government oppression and ethnic conflict, and they are left to survive in slum housing with no money for electricity and 3-4 people per bed. They suffer daily from discrimination and racism, and struggle to speak the language. This project will allow the children to grow up in safety, find employment and lift their families out of the cycle of poverty.
