For nearly a decade we've been supporting small health clinics in rural Nepal. We are now launching the first clinic specializing in women's health in a rural community. 90% of women in Nepal do not get any OBGYN care and this is especially true in rural areas. 600,000 women suffer with uterine prolapse. There are very few women's health facilities outside of major cities.
Women in rural Nepal have essentially no access to to OBGYN services. 90% of women will never see an OBGYN doctor. It's estimated that 600,000 women suffer from uterine prolapse and urinary tract infections, vaginal infections and other women's specific health problems go untreated.
This clinic will be located in Madavbesi. Madavbesi is on the main east-west highway in Nepal about 2 hours from Kathmandu, the capital city. The hills above Madavbesi are dotted with dozens of small farming communities who lack access to healthcare. Even where healthcare is available, it's rare that women's specific health issues are treated in those clinics. This clinic will focus on women's health issues and be staffed and equipped for that use.
There is a high incidence of HIV/AIDS in Nepal, and the discriminatory nature of the society greatly hinders a woman's ability to protect herself from such diseases, even from her husband. The discrimination propagates low levels of self worth and body awareness. In most of rural Nepal, women have very little knowledge about the causes and preventive measures of various health and nutritional problems.
