We would like to express our most sincere gratitude to those who donate to Fondo Semillas, who through their emergency support was able to support the community of Punta Maldonado, el Faro, and the neighborhood Los Lirios, municipalities of Cuajinicuilapa and San Nicolás, Guerrero, Afro Mexican territory.

Your solidarity has been fundamental to help families affected by the recent hurricanes, which devastated our homes and left great challenges.

October2024

Since our last report on June 2024, we had formalized agreements with the 19 organizations that are part of the “Women Rebuilding Guerrero” (WRG) program. Firstly, 20 organizations had been chosen, nevertheless, one of them was not able to continue in the process because their objectives were not aligned with those of the program. In this regard, we extended them an invitation to participate in the general call for proposal of Fondo Semillas.

In September 2024, the organization Mano Amiga de la Costa Chica, came to Mexico City to share a little bit of their actions. Their project aims to understand how Afro Mexican women live the emergency in their communities, in all psychological, economical, and social levels. This approach answers to the unpaid work overloading exacerbated by Hurricane Otis. The project also promotes the collective care and self-care, focusing on mental, sexual, and reproductive health of women, children, youth, and elder people. Following this topic, we have another visit programmed for the beginning of November, to Memoria de las Abuelas,

On the other hand, we had organized the First Face to Face Meeting of WRG, but due to the arrival of Hurricane John, that lashed the coasts of Guerrero and Oaxaca on September 23, the event was postponed until February 2025. The hurricane caused severe flooding, landslides, and human loses. In Acapulco, more than 40 neighborhoods were under water, and in rural areas up to 80% of agricultural production was lost, leaving many communities isolated and without access to food, drinking water or electricity. Besides, many houses built with fragile materials, such as clay or sheets, collapsed, resulting in many homeless families.

From Fondo Semillas, we had kept constant communication with the organizations located in Oaxaca and Guerrero to evaluate the emergency situation, their needs, as well as their physical and emotional health. Until the 3rd of October, we had received 14 solicitudes for the Rapid Response Fund (RRF), from which 12 belonged to organizations of WRG. In response, we decided to activate a General Rapid Response Fund to support the local organizations that were on the front line of the emergency. This support includes the creation of mental health brigades, food and construction material distribution, and the purchase of seeds and tools to ensure the livelihood of the affected families.

In the face of natural disasters such as Hurricane Otis and now Hurricane John, we activated to respond to the emergency. Through the community dining room, we contribute to the right to food and water.

The solidarity and empathy you show gives hope to the families.

We thank all of Fondo Semillas´s donors for their contribution.

October 2024

It is important to highlight that Hurricane John, occurred just 11 months after the devastating Hurricane Otis, has exacerbated even more the crisis in the region, specially affecting the most vulnerable populations who had not recovered yet of the last disaster. While significant efforts have been made, the magnitude of the damage and the reconstruction process require more resources to achieve a sustainable long-term impact. The communities are facing a large recuperation process, and the needs will continue to be huge.
