Empower Burmese Migrant Women this holiday season!

WEDA is seeking to expand its effectiveness and capacity in empowering local Burmese migrant women through a comprehensive project. The overall objective remains the same that is to raise awareness and to promote the rights of Burmese migrants women in Phang Nga Province in a proactive and sustainable manner.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Due to a number of conditions, such as undocumented status, Thai discrimination, and lack of education and vocational skills, Burmese migrant women are often left disadvantaged and susceptible to various forms of exploitation. Although Burmese women are especially vulnerable to abuse, sexual violence, trafficking, and other risks, the resources and capacity to stand up against such violations is limited by a pervasive lack of awareness about their human rights as women and as human beings.

How will this project solve this problem?

Providing the local women with educational workshops about their rights will better enable them to break the cycle of silence and abuse. Learning about their rights and legal options will empower them to make more informed decisions about their working and living conditions. In attending these workshops, Burmese migrant women will further develop a safe space of support and solidarity.

Potential Long Term Impact

The project gives Burmese women crucial information about their rights and opportunities, which in turn serves to lessen the vulnerabilities of their families and future generations of Burmese migrants. Furthermore, this educational process will alleviate patterns of poverty, while enhancing a sense of community empowerment.
