In hillside neighborhoods of La Paz, Bolivia thousands of women are exposed to a high risk of disasters, increasingly intensified by climate change. Lack of access to information and communication limits their opportunities to reduce dangers and adapt to these challenges, Red Habitat seeks to reduce this gap through digital literacy training, empowering women to use mobile devices so they can connect, access key information, and take preventive measures in the event of extreme events.
70% of the hillsides and ravines in La Paz are highly vulnerable to landslides, mudslides and floods, women living in these areas are not only exposed to these hazards but also live in self-built, precarious housing with inadequate stormwater and sanitary drainage systems, which further exacerbates their risk, when a disaster strikes, they are the first to face the consequences; they must ensure food, care for children, the elderly, and the sick, and salvage the few remaining belongings.
Our solution lies within the framework of climate justice, since women who have contributed the least to the climate crisis are the ones who suffer the most from its effects. Through this campaign, we seek to change that reality by providing them with access to digital tools that strengthen their autonomy, organizational capacity and power to influence risk reduction and climate adaptation, reducing the digital gap and promoting equity and resilience in communities facing climate change.
We want to create a sustainable and replicable experience of the use of digital devices by empowered women for disaster risk reduction as well as for citizen security, which has the potential to reach more than 1000 women, strengthening the resilience of neighborhoods with community stations, equipped with solar panels that will allow the charging of electronic devices and will serve to implement early warning systems in the event of risks and disasters, minimizing human and material losses.
