When we hear the word welfare many of us may be left with mental notes of Black Women who love to drain the system dry. The narrative of this demographic of people being lazy and not caring about their lives and or taking no personal responsibility for their futures has got to change as this could not be further from the truth!
When we created the One Million Moms OFF Welfare initiative (1MMOW), we knew that we could not move moms off the dependency on government subsidies without addressing the needs of fathers. We knew that strong fathers, create strong families and strong families create strong communities.
What we didn't know is that there is and continues to be a deliberate and intentional strategy around keeping fathers away from their families. Keeping fathers estranged from their children and conflict between the mothers.
What if this could change?
What if we all had a part to play in the breakdown and systemic failure of African-American families?
What if we ALL just cared a little more about how we actually got here? What if we chose to not believe the narrative and asked different questions? What if...
As of today, we have raised little money for this initiative on the GlobalGiving platform. And it's not because no one cares. Clearly, we are not speaking loud enough!
I'm excited about our new approach to fundraising and raising awareness for this Epic and Urgent issue as it is the cornerstone of the nation's mass incarceration, crime, juvenile delinquency, and affordable housing crisis.
The 1MMOW will leverage social media and technology to raise awareness and fundraise directly from the Moms themselves through our upcoming stream-a-thon. I believe when we take personal responsibility and ownership over the direction of our lives, then we can expect others to assist as we forward in our plan. This holds true for us as an organization as well as in our personal lives.
The answer we seek will not come when we wait for others to come to our rescue, but when we rescue ourselves from being victims, and helpless subjects with no control over our own destines!
As the President and Founder of Can I Live Housing Authority, I take the pledge to stand in the gap for these moms who are stuck raising children in poor communities, with substandard living conditions and limited opportunities.
I cannot do it alone!
Thank you for standing with me. Thank you for your continued support!
