Summary

Being salinity affected area, ground water is totally restricted in the project area. Inhabitants of the project area depends on surface water for drinking purpose. But most of the surface water bodies are polluted and so why people suffer from water borne diseases almost all the year round. To ensure drinking water for climate vulnerable people in this area 500 Bio-sand filters would be distributed at household level. 3 surface water bodies would be renovated and 3 PSF would be installed.

Challenge

Apart from impacts of natural disasters and climate change, safe drinking water scarcity is induced through other factors such as intrusion of saline water inland, water logging and lack of fresh water aquifers. Intrusion of saline water inland with less flow of water from upstream occurs especially during the dry season. Due to sea level rise & tidal surge, stormwater flown over the areas and all freshwater ponds got filled with brackish water from sea. The people lost sources of drinking water

Solution

Bio-sand filters will purify the locally available dirty pond water for drink. This filter can treat turbidity and bacteria and can produce sufficient drinkable water. This filter also can remove salinity so why people would be able to drink pond water which is even heavy dirty and saline. On the other hand, there are some community ponds which are almost polluted but can be utilized through renovation. After renovation through installation of PSF, 1500 households will get drinking water from it

Long-Term Impact

In the long run, after showcasing these interventions, salinity affected people would be motivated to co-opt with bio-sand filters and renovation of the pond to resolve the drinking water crisis. Both of this natural solution would be popular in this project area and people would get rid of water-borne diseases.
