We want to buy and to promote the use of manual pedal pumps in the villages in the district of Mangochi.Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa with a high percentage of children suffering from malnutrition. Pedal water pumps are an indispensable asset for the cultivation, which permits the village to cope with food insecurity. The second problem to cope with is access to drinking water:building wells in the villages will help families to prevent the spread of cholera.
Malawi, even though it has natural resources, remains one of the poorest countries in Africa with a high percentage of children suffering from malnutrition. Despite the presence of many water basins, land is very dry for most part of the year and access to drinking water is still a serious issue in many villages.
In a country like Malawi, in which there are lakes and rivers in abundance, three harvests instead of one could be easily accomplished by simply using the manual pedal water pumps. Besides the pump, fertilizers are also pretty much important in order to make the land fertile. The families which receive the pedal pumps for irrigation grow crops of maize and sew vegetables which can also be sold. Furthermore wells for drinking water will contribute to improving health conditions in many villages.
2 wells will guarantee drinking water for at least 2 villages and 10 pedal pumps will help 10 families (around 100 people) to be able to produce enough food for a whole year. Results:To improve the working of the fields and the harvest; To reduce the % of the population suffering from malnutrition; To prevent the beginning of diseases.
