This project aims to build 5 water and sanitation facilities for 5 kindergarten schools in Nam Giang Mountainous District, Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. This will provide safe running water systems for 742 ethnic minority children who are currently living and enrolling in these schools. In addition, we will create friendly and accessible sanitation facilities that will promote daily personal hygiene in order to improve their health and reduce their school absence.
Nam Giang suffers from inadequate water, especially in the dry season. Water supply in public facilities has become a serious issue. Water and sanitation systems dont exist in many schools or are old and degraded and not accessible for children with disabilities. A needs-assessment conducted in 2018 indicated that 14 schools in the district needed to improve water and sanitation conditions, 5 of which were kindergartens with more than 700 students affected.
This project secures clean water and adequate sanitation conditions for children to use during school time. (1) Water drainage/running system and water reservoirs will be constructed or installed, (2) Sinks and toilet seats will be provided for the schools, (3) 56 teachers in these schools will be trained on proper hand-washing, 4) Five Social events will be held to promote hand washing on the occasion of Middle Autumn Festival and (5) 742 kids will be trained to practice hand washing daily.
The project will impact 742 ethnic minority kids and ensure them to access to safe and sufficient water and sanitation. It will improve health and education and contribute to inclusion and equity. These lessons in sanitation and hygiene will impact them the rest of their lives, contributing to ongoing health. By training teachers, we will ensure that this education is sustainable and ongoing and that the children will continue to get teaching after the end of the project.
