WASH (Water And Sanitation for Health) program

by Warren Majengo Foundation

Summary

In an effort to continue to improve hygiene and sanitation at Majengo, we are launching the third phase of the WASH (Water And Sanitation for Health) program. This phase will include the installation of a safe garbage disposal system to help reduce the amount of smoke at the center from burning waste and an autoclave machine for sterilizing instruments. This program will help us continue on our quest to prevent malaria, communicable diseases, and bacterial infections.

Challenge

The WASH component of the program includes all supplies relating to sanitation of the home, and personal hygiene for each of the children. It also includes cleaners and mamas (guardians) to clean the home, and teach the children the proper methods for cleaning their environments. When 92 children are living in one home, illness and infection are risks. Cleaning is especially important to keep the environment sanitary to prevent the spread of germs.

Solution

This phase will include: the installation of a safe garbage disposal system to help reduce the amount of smoke at the center from burning waste and an autoclave machine for sterilizing instruments. This program will help us continue on our quest to prevent malaria, communicable diseases, and bacterial infections.

Long-Term Impact

With the purchase of these 2 items we will take another step towards living environmentally smart. Additionally our kids will be exposed to better hygiene habits. As they grow and have children of their own these will be vital life lessons.
