Assist GS REGA CATHOLIC School, located in Bigogwe Sector, Nyabihu District, Western Rwanda, to have access to drinking water to improve the health and educational conditions of a population of more than 4,000 students and teachers whose lack of clean drinking water exposes them to multiple diseases. The project will mainly improve the participation and well-being of the girl's students in the school and will have a significant impact on the entire population surrounding the school.
The school has 4,515 students who do not have access to drinking water. Currently they use water from unprotected sources such as: streams, marshes and when they need drinking water, they use over 2km pays more than 100Frws per 20litres while a normal price should be between 8-20Frws by 20litres, which causes unhealthy and high absenteeism and dropout from the school. There is less practices related to hygiene and sanitation and water born related diseases due to lack of clean water.
Provide school with drinking water by installing water pipes from the source to the school, build a water tank for the reserve. Mobilize and train the final beneficiaries especially for efficient infrastructure management and efficient use of water as well as hygiene and sanitation. Create water users committees and the health and environment club within the school to ensure the sustainability of the project.
A 70% reduction in hygiene and sanitation-related diseases in the school We anticipate a 20% increase in female students through the presence of water in and around the school because they often stay at home to help their mothers. At least all 4,515 students and 12,000 school neighbors will access to clean water and the problem related to non access to clean such as water born diseases will be reduced.
