Wake The Lake - Lake Rejuvenation Campaign

by United Way of Bengaluru

Wake the Lake is a strategic initiative to save the water bodies in Bangalore and turn them into hubs of community activity. The objectives of the campaign are as follows: a. Free the lake from garbage, effluents and other pollutants; restore the water quality. b. Revive the eco-system in and around the lake by creating micro climate for aquatic flora and fauna. c. Bring about community ownership through active volunteerism.

From 937 lakes in 1937 to just about 189 lakes now - Bengaluru's rapid urbanization and infrastructural development has taken a toll on the city's lakes. According to a study conducted by the Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, the water bodies of the city have reduced from 3.40 per cent in 1973 to just about 1.47 per cent in 2005, while the built up area increased from 27.30 per cent to 45.19 per cent during the same period.

As part of the initiative, we: a. Support local residents and organizations to undertake the responsibility of maintaining the lakes. b. Mobilize the city's community towards caring for these water bodies. c. Fund maintenance of the revived lakes and provide other necessary resources to strengthen the movement. Each revived lake is assessed on parameters that measure the lake's 'community-friendly' index. The score card helps us evaluate the success of the initiative.

Long-Term Impact

The potential long term impact of the project is as follows: a. Revival of eco system in Bangalore b. Clean ground water recharge c. Local residents taking active part in preserving and protecting the water body
