Waiting for New Premises

by Operation Thermos Operatie

Our association currently helps people in need with meals every evening in winter in a corridor of a metro station downtown Brussels. We aim to improve this by moving to new premises, close by, and fitting them in order to improve preparation / delivery of meals and ease the work for our teams. To make this possible, the more we manage to save on our yearly ordinary expenses (rent, disposable, food etc) the sooner we can start looking for new premises and a new kitchen, new kitchen utensils etc.

There are between 2,000 and 3,000 homeless people in Brussels. It is pretty difficult to count them as many of them are 'invisible' and avoid contact with social service or association. There are also people who have a house, sometimes even a job, but don't earn enough to feed their family the whole month. For these people in particular, invisible and working poors, our association is often the best solution: unlike others, we do not ask for identity or registration when we distribute the meals.

In order to improve the quality and distribution of the meals we distribute to these people during winter, premises with a full kitchen close to the distribution location would be of great help. Also these premises could be used for social and medical first help that we cannot offer for the moment. Premises located close by would help us continue providing nutrition for the years to come on a long-term basis, without being worried by this technical aspect.

Long-Term Impact

All our beneficiaries (+/- 150 per night) would benefit from these 'social premises'. Firstly because the preparation of meals would be easier for all the teams that take turns every day and would offer them a lasting solution. Food stock, and thus quality of food will also be improved. This is important for people in poverty. Secondly because it would allow us to offer people other services (social, medical, housing).
