Summary

Providing the youth with a skill is akin to teaching a man to fish than giving a fish everyday ! We will be sourcing the students from the poorer sections of society and skill them under these specialisations: 1. Plumbing and Pump Repair 2. Software Development 3. Tailoring 4. Driving Skills. Apart from the skills, value education and English communication is taught to these students. A strong emphasis on sincerity, honesty to the job, along with good communication will make them employable

Challenge

A Government study across India was conducted by National Skills Development Corporation, to identify the skill gaps across the states. In Tamil Nadu, there is a shortfall in the availability of skilled human resources which is expected to reach 3.6 lakh workers at the semi-skilled level and 2.25 lakhs at the skilled level by 2022. The excess availability of unskilled human resources may be channeled towards meeting this gap through skill development interventions.

Solution

This project aims to provide skilled manpower in the following areas: 1. Plumbing & Pump Repair with Industry partners Kohler and Grundfos 2. Seamstress course alongside industry partner Indian Terrain 3. Software Development with FreshWorks as our industry partner An industry partner to get the most appropriate course content and also better chance at finding a job post the course forms the backbone. Supplementary courses like Spoken English, Business Etiquette and Ethics are taught

Long-Term Impact

This project aims to fill the gap that College education fails to provide which is to provide a skill at no cost to the student. This is targeted at the under privileged sections of Chennai. More than 170 students / year will benefit from the program, it covers value education - to be sincere at work, punctuality, working in a group, English communication skills etc., that would make the candidate fully rounded and ready for employment. This would also make the candidate a better citizen
