Since 1991, CR is supporting hundreds of vulnerable slum children of Kolkata through educational programme. Apart from imparting education it emphasizes holistic development of its students, who enter the centres at a tender age of 4 and are supported till their youth stage when they are able to earn a living for themselves. Vocational training is an important component of CR's holistic education. Youth students put into various vocation stream to get employment opportunities with earned skills.
India's youth faces serious problems of unemployment and underemployment. The causes include dropping out of school, need to support family at an early age, a lack of information on the job market, and, most importantly, not possessing the basic skills required by employers today. Many youth engage in daily wage work unaware of the opportunities available to them. Slums are characterized by hard core poverty and as a result youths are very vulnerable as they are not opt any professional skill.
Vocational skill trainings will help each of the student to earn a dependable livelihood and finally break the cycle of poverty. Through these training courses, they will start learning to communicate, work in teams and accomplish projects. Healthy peer interaction and a positive environment of learning infused such confidence in them for winning over the challenges in their life. Their success serves as an inspiration to others and helping the needy to get a platform to present their caliber.
This project will provide basic vocational training to underprivileged boys to increase their chances of employability and to instill positive life skills such as entrepreneurship, professionalism, discipline, and teamwork amongst them and ultimately reduce their poverty level. This intervention will increase confidence, employability, probability of employment and earning efficiency of the vulnerable slum population.
