Summary

This project aims at reaching 37500 children underfive with Vitamin A supplementation and Albendazole for deworming in Tanzania. The country Demographic Indicator Survey of 2010 shows that 33% of Children and 37% of pregnant women have Vitamin A deficiency. Areas with Vitamin A deficiency are also endemic with soil-transmitted intestinal worms which contribute to child under nutrition. Vitamin A supplementation and Albendazole is a simple and cost efficient way to alleviate Vitamin A deficiency

Challenge

Stunting is 42% among children under five national wide. While in Mbeya is 50% among children under five, above the national average. Vitamin A deficiency in Tanzania is 33% and 37% in children under five and pregnant women respectively while in Mbeya is 26% in children under five and 33% in pregnant women. Vitamin A deficiency is a major contributing factor to the mortality of children under five and other life threatening conditions and poor performance in schools.

Solution

The distribution of Vitamin A and Albendazole will be done during national Vitamin A supplementation campaigns and community outreach events. TAVEO will identify and train field health providers who will be involved in the distribution. Nutritional education will be provided so as families are aware on nutritional food stuff that can be locally produced reach in Vitamin A nutrients for early prevention of Vitamin A deficiency, stunting and other threating under nutrition conditions for children

Long-Term Impact

Vitamin A supplementation can help to protect child health as it increases the chance of child survival, supports a healthy immune system, protects eyes and eyesight, prevents anaemia, promotes physical and mental growth. Providing deworming drugs such as Albendazole together with Vitamin A supplement can help to prevent intestinal worms that rob the body essential nutrients. Vitamin A supplement is a simple and cost efficient way to alleviate undernutrition among children under five.
