Summary

Libraries for the World is partnering with the Centre for Children and Library Foundation to build a community library in Uganda's rural village of Abwanget. The library will be housed in a community center that will also serve the educational and mental health needs of the local children. The library will serve all villagers --- population 1000 --- by providing access to books, computer terminals, and library programs.

Challenge

According to the International Federation of Library Association's 2007 World Report, there are 22 public libraries and 11 community libraries in Uganda to serve a population of close to 43 million people. The rural village of Abwanget does not yet have a library to serve its population of 1,000 people, making it extremely difficult for villagers to access information via books and computers. By donating to this project, you will ensure that villagers have access to a community library.

Solution

Although Uganda's literacy rate was 76.5% in 2018, it is estimated to be much lower among the rural population. Libraries for the World is partnering with the Centre for Children and Library Foundation to build a community library in Uganda's rural village of Abwanget. The library will be housed in a community center that will also serve the educational and mental health needs of local children. The library will serve all villagers by providing access to books and computer terminals.

Long-Term Impact

Funding for this project includes a librarian's annual salary. By providing villagers with access to information and books, this project will help to improve literacy rates. The community center will serve as a hub to support the social wellbeing of its residents. The counselor will have a sustained, positive impact on children's mental health and wellbeing. In addition, educational sponsorships ensure that vulnerable children remain in school, allowing them to rise out of poverty.
