Veterinary care for relinquished animals

by Dumb Friends League

Summary

Some animals relinquished to shelters have not received the most basic of veterinary care. The Dumb Friends League is committed to providing comprehensive veterinary care to animals relinquished to our centers in order to get them healthy and ready for adoption. Animals often need medical intervention such as vaccines, dental procedures and complex surgeries, including orthopedic procedures, eye surgery or mass removal. Thousands of animals arrive here annually with medical needs.

Challenge

The Dumb Friends League receives more than 20,000 animals each year, and many are in need of medical intervention so that they may become healthy and placed into a new home. Animals suffering from burns, in need of eye surgery or mass removal, hit by a car and in need of orthopedic surgery, suffering from dental disease or deliberately harmed by humans; all are seen and provided the best possible care at Dumb Friends League. With care, these animals have a chance for recovery and being adopted.

Solution

This project will help support the work of the Dumb Friends League veterinary services team and will help us meet the veterinary needs of animals, who, through no fault of their own, are sick, injured or suffering from abuse or neglect. Funds raised through this project will help provide vaccinations, surgeries, medications, recuperative care, treatment of injuries such as burns, and conditions like frostbite and hypothermia.

Long-Term Impact

The outcome of providing this kind of comprehensive veterinary care to these animals is multifaceted. In the short term, it results in relinquished animals being brought to a facility that is able to alleviate pain and suffering. It results in an animal receiving critical care and then the opportunity for adoption. In the long term, it results in a healthier pet population in the community and helps prevent disease outbreaks such as parvovirus and distemper or, worse, rabies.
