Hello VE Friends and Family,

24h Campaign!

On July 12th-13th we had our annual 24h campaign. This year, thus far, has been one of great changes, the biggest of which being undoubtedly the arrival of Mercedes Henderson as our new Executive Director, marking the beginning of a new era. Here at VE, we see change as an opportunity; an opportunity to do better, to reach further and to have an enduring impact on the lives of the children we care for. With more than 13.000 dollars raised - and even more in matching donations - you have validated our project. You allow us to continue working with youth at social risk in Santiago and develop our organization for another year. Thank you for your support!

Programs News

In other news, our life skills program ¡Soy Independiente! is now fully underway. Three groups of 42 eager young adults meet twice a week to participate in life skills workshops and discuss their future independent adult lives. So far, the program has been a wonderful experience for both monitors and youth. Each participant brings a positive and determined attitude to the table, proving to us once more that this program serves the purpose we envisioned. Thank you for allowing us to continue our work!

Volunteers in Training

Our May starters are now more than halfway through their volunteer experience and as such, our traditional Jornada took place. The whole staff, interns and volunteers of VE, with a special appearance from Pablo Jorquera, member of our Chilean board of directors, spent the weekend of July 1st outside Santiago in Hijuelas. Fun team-building exercises and dedicated time for self-reflection helped us get to know each other more and allowed us to reflect on how our personal and professional goals have evolved throughout the past two months.

Un abrazo from Santiago!

Just recently, on April 21, we held our biannual Festival de Arte. Close to 30 children came to the event from two of our partner organizations, Hogar San Francisco de Regis and Hogar Fundación Pléyades in Santiago. The theme for this Festival was Nuestro Mundo or Our World!

We know how important it is for the children to be able to express creativity, as well as academic skills, so we have Festival de Arte to celebrate both! In the months leading up to Festival our volunteers hold workshops where the children have fun drawing, painting, making 3D art and much more.

At each festival there is a performance from the current volunteers and interns, followed by performances from the children and their tíos and tías. This Festival included a variety of games, choreographed dancing, lots of singing, a theatrical production and a fashion show!

After the performances, we enjoyed some delicious snacks and our judges carefully chose the winning pieces of art from each category. They were so impressed with all of the pieces and with the variety of ideas the children came up with. Many of the children won special prizes, but in the end everyone received a gift!

We are excited to receive our new volunteers for the May class and start planning the next Festival de Arte. It is always such an inspiration to see the children’s creativity shine through!

In December, we held our biannual Festival de Arte, with 20 children from three of our partner organizations across Santiago. The theme for this Festival was Superheroes!

Festival de Arte is a celebration of the children’s creativity, as well as our volunteers! We know how important it is to be able to express this creativity, as well as academic skills, so our volunteers hold workshops in the months leading up to Festival, where the children have fun drawing, painting and much more!

At each festival there is a performance from the current volunteers and interns, followed by performances from the children and their tíos and tías. This spectacle included minions, ninjas, everyday superheroes and some fun games.

After the performances, we enjoyed some delicious snacks and our judge carefully chose the winning pieces of art from each category. She was so impressed with all of the pieces and with the variety of ideas the children came up with.

We are already excited for our next Festival de Arte in April and can’t wait to once again see the children’s creativity shine through!

Paul Tough reminds us in his book, How Children Succeed, that “…adolescence can be a time for a different kind of turning point, the profoundest sort of transformation: the moment when a young person manages to turn herself away from near-certain failure and begins to steer a course towards success.”

VE Global is proud to announce a new project that will help many Chilean youth do just that: the Chilean Ministry of Social Development has just awarded VE Global a grant to help develop a new program:  ¡Soy Independiente!

In 2016, we will design and implement a Life Skills Training series for 50 young people, aged 14 to 19 years old, living in children’s shelters in Santiago.

Expanding on the last 10 years of our amazing work with children and youth through our volunteer program, our new program will provide the young people we work with the practical life skills and emotional tools they need to help break free from cycles of abuse and poverty that affect the lives of too many!

We are so thrilled to begin September with a new volunteer group and this exciting chance to have an even stronger impact on fulfilling our vision of a global community that ensures equality of opportunity for all children!

eXtreme English Day at VE Global
eXtreme English Day at VE Global

Kids at school in Chile start having English as part of their curriculum in middle school, but oftentimes classes are too big to get all the practice that everyone needs to learn a new language.  VE Global helps support language education because the kids we work with need lots of support and confidence building activities to show them that learning a new language can be fun.

As part of VE's English in Motion program, VE Global volunteers and kids recently tested their English language skills during VE's first eXtreme English day. Girls of all ages from Hogar San Francisco and Refugio de la Misericordia got into teams and worked with the volunteers on numbers, colors, clothing and other important English vocabulary to help boost their confidence for English classes at school!

A special thank you to Hogar San Francisco for hosting the day! Fun was had by all!
