Spring was in full bloom this year for Safi Life as we entered into many new partnerships and collaborations.

First, we have been in communication with another wonderful GlobalGiving partner, Esther's Aid, that is currently looking to empower sex trafficking survivors in Rwanda.  Part of Safi Life's mission is to help the vulnerable, meaning orphans, genocide survivors, and/or anyone who has been trafficked.  We are hoping to collaborate with this wonderful organization and perhaps help to sponsor one of the survivors in attending a college or vocational school of her choosing.

This year is also bringing forth local collaborations, namely with the wonderful Hollywood Women's Collective.  The HWC empowers women in the Los Angeles area who work in the entertainment industry through accountability, spiritual growth, project collaboration, and charity work.  Their two charity partners are The Downtown Women's Center, helping women find a pathway out of homelessness, and Safi Life!  We are honored to be connected to this amazing group of ladies, and are planning an end of the year fundraiser gala/art show to raise funds together. Details to come! (If you or anyone you know is an artist and may be able to donate a piece, please email us! info@safilife.org)

Lastly, we have built a wonderful partnership with a few passionate students at Santa Monica College.  During the month of May the students helped us to raise awareness on their campus, and sell T-shirts both in person and online!  We raised over $1200 for Safi Life through T-shirt sales, and even have a few left over to sell at our Safi Life charity walk in September!  (Please follow us on Instagram or Twitter @safi_life, or Facebook TheSafiLifeFoundation for walk details). Additionally, many of the students are transferring schools, so we will be implementing Safi Life campus chapters at wonderful universities including UCLA in the fall!  We are so inspired by these compassionate students and look forward to seeing all that they will do.  Attached are photos of our SMC student ambassadors.

We cannot thank you enough for your generous donations to our mission.  We already have two students excited to begin college in the fall, Zoula and Safi.  These two young orphaned women want to study hospitality and tourism, changing the narrative surrounding Rwanda.  Zoula is the youngest of 8 children, both of her parents were killed in the genocide, but she persisted in securing an education for herself and we will be helping her the rest of the way.  Every dollar you give goes a long way in making these dreams come true.  Zoula and Safi's photos are attached.

Have a wonderful summer!

Bam

Thanks to our donors' steadfast care, compassion, and financial contributions over the years, we are proud and honored to bring you photos of our newest graduates, Bam and Fredine.

Bam has been with us since the beginning, and now has a degree in Computer Science from Kigali Independent University.  She wants to begin a career as a network administrator, and has even designed her own website over the years.  We are keeping our fingers crossed for successful entrepreneurship from Bam, and know she will go very far.

Fredine has also been with us from the start, and graduated in January from the Akilah Institute with a degree in IT.  Fredine plans to be a system developer or programmer in Rwanda.   Her two female inspirations are Anna Patterson of Google (the architect of Google’s large search index, TeraGoogle, that launched in early 2006), and Rwandan Lucy Mbabazi. Lucy is the country manager of Visa in Rwanda, Burundi and Malawi and inspires women locally to achieve their dreams.  Fredine is pictured below with family and our namesake and County Director, Safi Mukundwa, on the day of her graduation.

We will keep our donors up to date on the successes of our graduates as they search for and find jobs of their own.  In the meantime, we look forward to welcoming new students in 2018.

Thank you for all you do impact our student's lives for the better.  We are creating generational change in Rwanda, one girl at a time, and with your help, we plan to reach hundreds.

Over the last couple of months we have been working very closely with Safi Mukundwa, our County Director in Rwanda, to devise a plan for Safi Life's future endeavors.

One of our programs, designed by Safi, is a health initiative for pre-teen and teenage Rwandan girls.  Since so many young Rwandan women are not aware of their own reproductive system due to cultural hesitations, Safi has offered to begin a mentorship program.  This will not only teach girls about their bodies and their health, but allow them to stand up for themselves and stay in school.  Our college scholarship recipients will also be aiding in this process, and we are currently looking for a classroom space for the talks.

Additionally, we have spoken with a sister organization whose work resides in Rwanda and is interested in teaming up with us.  We will hopefully have more information on this partnership in the coming months, but are looking forward to working with a new network of people.  The partnership might also provide us with the opportunity to sponsor women who have been trafficked, something that has been a long term goal for Safi Life.

Safi Life has also just completed its second annual holiday fundraiser! (photos included) This year we chose a low key and fun event space, PINZ Bowling Center in Los Angeles, and were accompanied by over 50 of our closest friends and local supporters.

It is times like these that remind us how very important relationships are, especially in the nonprofit sector.  In many instances our events, fundraisers, and projects only succeed if our friends pitch in to help on our behalf: volunteering, spreading the word, giving of their time and talents.  When trying to do anything at the lowest possible cost, favors become essential.  Safi Life is blessed to be surrounded by warm hearted individuals, all working for the benefit of the organization, and giving their all.

It is the same with our donors - without your optimism and spirit we would be nowhere.  Especially around the holidays, it is important to us that we thank you wholeheartedly for your generous support and love for the women of Rwanda.

We truly hope that you enjoy the holiday season with friends and loved ones, and look forward to sharing the successes of 2017 with you.

We are so pleased to share information on our very first scholarship graduates!  These young women started their school year in August and will graduate in 2017.

Bamurange will graduate with a degree in information technology at Independent Kigali University (ULK), Kigali Campus.

Jeanne will graduate with an accounting degree, from Independent Kigali University as well.

Fredine will graduate in IT at Akkilah Institute.

After graduation, the next challenge will be for the graduates to be able to find employment in their chosen field.  In an effort to enhance our program and provide opportunities for our scholarship recipients in the future, we are working with other non governmental organizations in the Kicukiro District.  Our County Director, Safi, met with other organizations in the Kicukiro District that also take care of orphans and families in Rwanda.  Safi Life is hoping to partner not only with other NGOs but also merchanise companies in Rwanda.  One of them is AVEGA Agahozo, a genocide widow's association that merchandises Rwandan products for international sale.  Many of the AVEGA women are fighting against AIDS and it is our desire to be a champion for AIDS/SIDA community members through partnership.

We have also reached out to one of our inspirations, The Girl Effect, to discuss their pilot program TEGA.  TEGA is a girl operated, mobile-enabled research tool that delivers rapid accurate insight into girls' lives in developing nations.  We encourage our scholarship recipients to join in partnership with TEGA and share their personal insights.

Saif Life is also looking to broaden our community service program and to give back to our community in Kigali.  We have a close relationship with the KULA Project and are hoping to contribute to their tree planting efforts in Rwanda.

Thank you for your continued support for our efforts in Rwanda!  We are so excited to be changing community and individual lives for the better.

When we first started Safi Life, I was adamant that the foundation's goals should never come from me and my own limited knowledge of what should be done in Rwanda, but instead from the Rwandans themselves.  Our advisors in Rwanda must always be the first to determine our path, as they are the ones who see exactly what their country needs, and what is necessary culturally and economically to ensure lasting change.

In August, Safi Life will celebrate its fifth anniversary, and we couldn't be more proud.  Amidst many changes, one thing has always remained a constant: the aid and support for our friends in Rwanda comes as a direct response to their needs and requests.  After all, we are here to serve them.  It is Safi Life's belief that the more we listen, the more powerfully we can serve.

As a testament to this belief, we have now agreed to take Safi Life in a broader and even more exciting direction.  In addition to our current scholarship program for female genocide survivors and orphans, Safi, JP, and our Board of Advisors in Rwanda have suggested that we begin to serve the youth and disabled as well.  We will sponsor mentorship programs that encourage entrepreneurship, health education on wellness and HIV prevention, welfare programs, and cross-cultural support for all.

Our primary focus will of course remain with the vulnerable young women in Rwanda, but we will now also offer support to the generation behind them, and the disabled members of their community.  Safi Life will begin these wellness programs near our office in Kigali City, and expand from there.  It is our hope that Safi Life can become known as a refuge of love and hope for all of our participants, and their community at large.

Thank you for walking with us on this journey.  We appreciate you every step of the way!
