Now that those who are 18 years and above in Rwanda are able to be vaccinated, life is returning to normal! Though multiple lockdowns have taken a toll on our operations, we are happy and proud to be supporting a strong and capable group of women in 2021. In fact, our students are so impressive that our 2021 NDASHOBOYE Graduation will be on a national level!! We could not be more thrilled. Meanwhile, the local government has also noticed our positive efforts in the community and is asking if we can take more students in! This is a big undertaking, but worth it, and we are hoping to fundraise to add more vulnerable women to our 2022 class. Please help us in this endeavor!
We know in these difficult times that there are countless other (and very deserving) nonprofits that we can all be donating to. We ask that you do not take away from your other gifts, but also consider our program. These women are often in desperate need before NDASHOBOYE, and frequently solo parents of young children. We also give 100% of all donations to the women in Rwanda. We are proud and honored to receive any donation you may offer, no matter its size.
Safi Life is pleased to announce that five of our graduates have successfully completed mentorships with Mentors Without Borders. This three month process included a goal-setting dialogue and remote technology training, as well as next steps for their futures in Rwanda. We are so proud!
We have also been in touch with Journeyman International for a potential building project that will support our NDASHOBOYE sewing school in Kigali. With a new architectural plan that they will create for us, we are hoping to fundraise to build upon the school or perhaps even build a new school from the ground up! We are hopeful that our visions will align and we can find the corporate and individual sponsorship necessary to make this building happen. Your continued suppot is always appreciated!
Due to COVID our operations were shut down last year, then reopened, then shut down again, but now we are back up and running better than ever. We are grateful for all of our students and teachers and the hard work that they have put in. Updates to come!
We are so excited to announce that Safi Life Rwanda has the greenlight to go ahead with a Covid-safe NDASHOBOYE training program for 50+ women.
The Rwandan government had enforced a strict lockdown and are now easing communities back into normalcy, with social distancing and the wearing of masks. We look forward to fully cooperating and having all of the necessary tools at our disposal.
This is where you come in! We cannot continue to do our sewing training program without your help in this vulnerable season.
What were currently need funding for are:
-A step and wash
-Masks (daily for each girl)
-Additional pay for teachers working overtime due to smaller groups and longer hours
In other news:
We are also hoping to work with Fairkind again as we had planned before the pandemic by designing beanies for their brand. The hold-up was due to sewing materials being frozen in shipping from Kenya because of the virus. We are looking forward to advancing this project as well.
Thank you so very much for helping in these endeavors to get us up and running again safely! Any donation you can make will help us tremendously!
We here at Safi Life are first and foremost sending love and affection to all those affected by the coronavirus. We hope that this message finds you, your families and loved ones safe and healthy.
Our reporting is short this month, as we ourselves deal with the after effects of the pandemic and how it has affected our plans. We did manage to bring together a deal with the fair trade company looking to produce beanies, and as soon as imports from Kenya are accepted back into Rwanda (we will be using sewing needles and materials from Kenya) we can begin production! We are so excited about this revelation and will certainly keep you posted. The idea that our NDASHOBOYE graduates can become self-sustaining entrepreneurs would be a dream come true. We look forward to that dream coming to fruition.
In Rwanda, it was very difficutl in April as the citizens had to memorialize the 1994 genocide against Tutsi while under house arrest. It is usually extremely therapeutic to gather in community and mourn, so this year has been particularly difficult. We send all of our love and prayers to our friends in Rwanda and anywhere else where isolation has proved especially painful. We are with you in solidarity.
Safi Life has begun a new partnership with the nonprofit organization Resonate, a Kigali-based social enterprise that unlocks the leadership potential of women and girls in East Africa. Resonate partners with groups and organizations providing educational, vocational, and entrepreneurial programs, and integrates its leadership workshops into those programs. Through this approach, they ensure the beneficiaries have the confidence and skills to turn opportunities into action.
Together, Safi Life and Resonate will be hosting a multi-day leadership workshop for the women and girls of Safi Life and our NDASHOBOYE project. After these 2-8 day leadership programs, Resonate has seen the following results: 60% take on leadership roles, 36% start businesses, and 43% gain a promotion in academic or professional advancement. We are so excited to see where this journey takes our scholarship recipients, and are so proud to be working with a like-minded organization.
Safi Life is also beginning a conversation with a fair trade company to potentially create and sell beanies for them internationally, which would then allow our graduates to become even more self-sufficient with worldwide customers.
We are always looking for ways to partner alongside organizations with similar goals in mind, so if you or someone you know may be looking for a fair trade partnership we are happy to learn more!
Thank you for your consideration and support of all of Safi Life's missions.
