                                                                  September, 2010

Addressing the needs of individuals and families in need.  planting the seeds for a healthy future.

As we all know, 21million Pakistanis are directly affected by the recent floods.  Its a staggering statistic making it one of the biggest natural disasters in recent memory.

As we celebrated Eid this month, Islam’s largest holiday, we must remember those who were not able to celebrate. While we buy new clothes for ourselves, let’s also buy some for them. While we share sweets and dinner with friends, we should also remember to give them food. While we sleep well in our beds, we must try to donate bedsheets and tents to them so that they may have shelter. So this Eid ul Fitr, while we celebrate and pray, we also pray for the health and well-being of those in need.

UM Healthcare teams have been visiting villages damaged and stranded by the floods in Charsadda and Nowshera, and have treated almost 1,600 patients in August and 600 already in September.  In addition to our medical services we have helped over 6,000 people since the flood, distributing vaccines, clean water, counseling services.  These treatments and emergency relief services have been made possible with support from CDRS, DRIP, DMC, Edhi Foundation, and generous donations by individuals.

Using our sustainable purchasing, model, it costs only $25 to provide enough food for a family for one week, and $100 to buy supplies to run a daily medical camp in a village.

Funds are needed to get supplies and volunteers to where they are most needed. Donations will pay for food aid, safe drinking water, infant formula, medicines, vaccinations, emergency equipment, ambulance rental, fuel, and logistics to get these supplies through the difficult terrain.

Our disaster relief efforts are reaching out to the most desperate and stranded.  We are  using our innovative mobile phone software to communicate with Lady Health Workers in the field.  We are also collaborating with physicians at Swinfen Charitable Trust in the UK and at the National University Hospital of Singapore to conduct telemedicine consultations with specialists on our most difficult medical cases.
