Committed Communities Development Trust (CCDT) implements Residential Care Program that restores a wholesome childhood to children infected/affected by HIV/AIDS. These children are either orphaned or from single parent. We support these children through medical, nutrition, education & employability training. We are seeking education and nutrition sponsorship for 85 children infected/affected by HIV/AIDS residing in our centers in Mumbai and Thane.
Death of parent/s due to HIV/AIDS invariably results in disintegration of an economically disadvantaged family. Stigma of HIV often discourages extended family members to take care of child. These children generally lack proper nutrition which threatens their health & well-being. Circumstances push children to either drop out of school or they become irregular to school. Many children who come to the program were found to be 'slow learners', due to their experience of trauma and poor nutrition.
To restore children's health a seasonal diet plan including 3 large & 2 small meals in a day with homemade supplements & special diet based on health status is developed by Nutritionist. Cooks are trained on cooking low-cost, healthy foods & hygienic practices. All children are enrolled & retained in school/colleges. Staff conducts monthly school/college visits to assess their progress. Each child has an individualized education plan, attends support classes & undergo interest, aptitude test.
The program has facilitated overall growth & development of over 577 vulnerable children infected/affected by HIV/AIDS. Nutrition & Education provided in an enabling environment without any stigma has helped children develop as responsible, proactive & independent individuals. 100% children are enrolled in schools/colleges or undergo skills training & are supported until 21 years of age or they start living on their own. Thus, children eventually reclaim their rightful place in the community.
