Project Report | Dec 4, 2014
Winter Updates from Tutorpedia Foundation

By C. Nikole Saulsberry | Project Leader

The winter holiday season is upon us once again and Tutorpedia Foundation gives thanks for our amazing tutors, outstanding program partners, and compassionate people like you whose support has already provided over 1,000 hours of free tutoring to under-resourced students this school year!

Tutor Spotlight: Meet Tonei
Tonei recently moved to the Bay Area after completing an MA in Social Justice and Community Development at Loyola University Chicago. Born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, Tonei comes from three generations of teachers and has been working on issues of education equity and LGBTQ rights since 2006.

In addition to managing Tutorpedia Foundation’s San Francisco programs, Tonei teaches for the Civic Education Project at Northwestern University's Center for Talent Development, coordinates a research project on freedom of expression and online hate speech, and is a managing partner of the Alaska Commons, an Anchorage-based online media startup. Tonei is also a proud alum of American University and a frequent traveler – on track to have flown over 71,000 miles in 2014 alone!

"I enjoy working working with Tutorpedia Foundation because I get to learn about communities all across the Bay Area while helping level the playing field for our students."

New Partner: Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco
When it comes to education, we know that relationships matter more than anything else and Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) is an excellent example of the transformation students can have through mentoring. Through their Clubhouses, staff, and programs BGCSF creates stability, consistency, and a sense of physical and emotional safety for their over 6,300 members. Like our tutors, BGCSF staff serve each day as positive role models who provide ongoing caring relationships to youth. Founded in 1891, BGCSF now serves 1,400 students each day. This fall we began tutoring students at all 9 Clubhouses and we are excited to collaborate with BGCSF to ensure their members leave at 18 "ready for life!"

Education In the News
  • In episode "538: Is This Working" This American Life highlights a need for personalization in classroom management.

Thank you for supporting our students.
We appreciate you being a part of our Community of Learners.
