Challenge

The Gurkha (Servicemen from Brigade of Gurkhas) veterans and their families who emigrated to UK from Nepal, following the UK government decision to allow them to settle in the UK in around 2009 constitute one of the key minority communities across many cities in England. However, they are struggling to settle in, integrate into the societies and use mainstream services. Their poor living conditions, isolation and wellbeing issues have attracted considerable media attention during last few years.

Solution

This project will provide support and guidance to the Gurkha veterans and families across England to address their challenges (e.g. unemployability, lack of access to public services). In partnership with stakeholders, a number of approaches such as training workshops, drop-in sessions, awareness events, tel/email support, peers support, mentoring, sharing of publications will be adopted to support these veterans and families and transform their lives.

Long-Term Impact

This project will not only bring the members together, develop their comradeship and build relationship with other communities and stakeholders to address their challenges, but also will enable the veteran communities to enhance their accessibility to information and resources and fulfil their potential by developing their capacity and confidence to access better opportunities and the public services. The enhanced access to public services will help to improve their health and wellbeing.
