Our goal is to help the development of underprivileged children by promoting core values such as friendship, respect, honesty, and solidarity. We provide social, cultural, and recreational activities in which children interact with volunteers who serve as role models. Volunteers provide leadership, inspiration, and encouragement for children to develop into productive and healthy members of society.
In Rio de Janeiro, there are 763 slums housing roughly one-fourth of the city's population. The majority of the children in the slums live below the poverty line, with many of them being sick, or going through long periods of hospitalization. Sick children tend to be isolated with little or no interaction with the rest of society. Sonhar Acordado aims to help 13 of the slums community by organizing social, cultural and recreational activities for over 2000 children in these communities.
Our approach is to recruit and train approximately 3000 volunteers to spend time with disadvantaged children and help them experience core values through several activities, implemented throughout the year. Volunteers are also trained to perform activities in hospitals for the children going through medical treatment, aiming to bring joy to their lives during those difficult times.
To help transform the daily life of disadvantaged children and, ultimately, their reality. With the partnership of our volunteers, we hope children will incorporate values that will change their perception of the world and help them live a productive and healthy life. By experiencing care, friendship, and love, children will see their lives in a different light, with dignity and hope, and they will grow up learning to help others.
