Alto Peru is a grassroots Peruvian organization that promotes life skills and healthy habits through sports and social cohesion. We engage youth in positive sport-based activities that promote health, civic engagement and leadership. Our youth-led, neighborhood-based surf and muaythai schools are: safe spaces managed by caring adults that promote autonomy and self determination through challenging activities.
Alto Peru is located in the slopes of a mountain with an amount of potential for activities. Our community is a slum with high rates of violence and crime. Growing up in this context can be really challenging. Children are exposed to violence at home and in the neighborhood; they don't have access to safe spaces to study, play or explore. Young people from vulnerable backgrounds don't get opportunities for developing Life Skills. Sports are really engaging and work as a vehicle to educate.
Our sport program provides a safe space where trained caring adults encourage children and youth to learn positive behaviors and emotional tools through exciting, evidence-based activities. These help children and young adults cope with stress and form positive bonds that increase their resilience. We promote physical activity, communication with empathetic adults, and development of positive behaviors and values. Our methodology is evidence-based.
The program will receive 150 children and teenagers allowing them to play, learn fundamental life skills, increase their well-being, improve their physical and mental health, learns skills to cope with stress and develop a sense of belonging to a positive crew.
