Summary

There is a need for well-trained personnel (midwives, and health personnel) in obstetrics. The activities after the birth and the necessary skills have to be learned so concretely that this is the approach to the project. For example, it is easy to learn to reanimate a new-born with respiratory depression. A problem is the fact that women often suffer from fecal or urinary incontinence due to weakening of the pelvic floor as a result of inadequate care of birth injuries and poorly perform

Challenge

The project is located in the Volta lake Island communities where about 2,000 people live over bank of the river. Canoe and boats are used to crossover to the other side. Most often, there are no medical centers in the Island communities resulting to maternal and infant death in the area. One of the most common death are those that are associated with neonatal. In order to reduce the risk these women faces, a plan intervention is to train 10 midwives in baby resuscitation.

Solution

Trained midwives will help provide needed care and support for pregnant women. They will also teach their colleagues who are community health nurses how to resuscitate a new-born baby with birth injury. They will counsel women on the need to attend antenatal care. They will teach them about hygiene and good nutrition during pregnancy. They will provide care and support for a baby who does not cry soon after delivery and to revive such a child to live.

Long-Term Impact

The project will educate 10 midwives on baby resuscitation. It is expected that about 30 babes would be resuscitated to life. About 300 women will become knowledgeable in good nutrition during pregnancy. About 290 pregnant women are expected to deliver with a trained midwife. About 1,000 people will be become knowledgeable in hygiene and environmental sanitation and cleanliness. About 800 people will adopt best practices of good health and family planning.
