Three in one thousand babies born in Yunnan Province, China are born with a kind of fatal heart disease that is curable only if diagnosed in the newborn period. Due to underinvestment in healthcare in Western China, almost all of these newborn babies die before one month of age. With your support of our project to train local doctors and nurses in modern screening and diagnostic techniques, together we can save these children.
In rural western China, tens of thousands of babies die because they do not receive a proper heart examination when they were born. There is a program in place to birth all rural babies in larger county level hospitals. This program allows centralization of newborn care with better trained medical staff to care for newborns. However, these doctors and nurses require training on how to do a proper newborn cardiac examination. Please become our partner and help us train them.
We have already trained about one quarter of all the doctors in rural Yunnan how to do proper heart examination of newborn infants. We have come a long way, but we have a long way still to go. We expect to find hundreds of infants with heart disease who can be saved using life saving surgery available in Yunnan Province. We and our partners are providing funds for their surgeries. We need your help to fund the training of all rural obstetric doctors and nurses to examine these newborns.
We expect that our project will be a model that the rest of China, and perhaps the rest of the developing world will follow. We have contacts in the Chinese Ministry of Health, who, if our project is successful, will be able to request long-term funding for nationwide training projects such as ours. We expect that publication of our success will lead other developing nations in Asia, Africa and South America to follow suit.
