We held a workshop for parents in partnership with Becky Scool in Kibera. Our main goals were to provide an overview of what sexual violence is, including the different types of sexual violence that can occur, the impact it can have on survivors, and the prevalence of sexual violence. The caregivers shared different topics, especially dress code, upbringing, communication, and the risks of staying in an informal settlement environment that expose their children to sexual abuse.
They were also interested in how to start initiating the conversation since they find the topic quite embarrassing. The session really helped them understand the importance of starting early while the child is still young to equip them to prevent themselves from abuse. They also understood how to identify signs of sexual violence, respond to disclosures of sexual violence, and report incidents of sexual violence. They had some concerns regarding reporting because some shared true stories of how the process takes time, inadequate finances to cater for the process, the trauma that comes with reporting, and the lack of support from the community members.
We provided guidance on establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries and respectful relationships with children at home because some of the caregivers didn't have a healthy relationship with their children. Even though they live in a slum, we discussed ways to create a safe environment for children, including strategies for preventing sexual violence and promoting a safety culture of reporting, supporting, and empowering their children with best practices to end the cycle of sexual abuse.
Your continued support helped us equip the parents and keep children safe. Thank you.
