Train Caregivers to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse

by Freely in Hope
Train Caregivers to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse

We launched our first children's book, Pendo's Power! This illustrated storybook empowers both parents and children to respond to sexual abuse. Written in English and Kiswahili, children will learn a new language and how to harness the power in their voice to speak up against sexual violence. Pendo's Power teaches lifesaving education and empowering resources that prevent child sexual abuse.

With this book's launch, we will provide this as a resource for parents and caregivers in our communities. This year, we will be expanding our training programs for parents and caregivers. This includes topics on body autonomy, consent, safe touch, and reporting. All of these are important skills for parents and caregivers to reinforce with their children to prevent child sexual abuse. We look forward to sharing the learnings with you!

Our courageous community of survivor leaders designs and leads powerful solutions that are ending sexual violence in their communities. Our program which trains parents and caregivers to prevent and respond to sexual abuse was designed out of the need to engage all stakeholders in the fight against child sexual abuse.

This much-needed resource was born from the pain that the survivors in our community have gone through. 90% of us were abused as children and our parents and caregivers either didn't know it had happened or even when they did, they didn't have the right information and resources to protect us or support our healing.

So the bulk of our work focuses on our own healing from past trauma so that we are whole enough to bring healing to the world. We facilitated a retreat for all the survivor leaders in our community to lean into the pain from our past and allow it to heal within loving relationships and community and with trauma-informed supportive resources.

Thank you for your support that allows us to provide healing support for our community which is providing resources to families to keep children safe from the very pain they went through.

As we have facilitated sexual violence prevention workshops with children and teenagers, we have found that there's a great need for information and resources on how to prevent child sexual violence in our communities.

Coupled with facilitating workshops for caregivers and practitioners on how to prevent child sexual abuse, we have been sharing resources with our online community. We have shared resources on trauma-informed parenting, relational boundaries to prevent child sexual abuse, and healing from child sexual abuse from a survivor's perspective. Having these much-needed conversations is a great step in ending the culture of silence that perpetuates sexual violence in our communities and providing all stakeholders with information to raise their awareness and equip them with best practices to end child sexual abuse.

Your donation is helping us disseminate these resources to more people and keep the next generation safe. Thank you for advocating with us through your generous support!

As we are preparing to expand our child protection trainings across 11 counties in Kenya, we are laying the groundwork by training and equipping survivor-leaders. Last week, we held another child protection training for children and involved our survivor-leaders in the process. Your donations are impacting survivors in powerful ways—platforming their teaching abilities, providing quality education, and spreading awareness on child protection in our communities.

Our first children's book, Pendo's Power, releases in October! Because you donated to this campaign, you're invited to an exclusive donor gathering on Zoom to hear more about our child protection programs. This gathering will feature Lydia Matioli, Program Manager and author of the forthcoming book, Pendo's Power! She'll be sharing exciting updates around the book's formation and revealing the cover art of her book. You don't want to miss it! Join us on July 30!
