PEDO Project Report 15 March to 15 July 2012

Introduction and Background:

PEDO has been established HYTEC Institute of Technology in Peshawar and Women Skill Development Centre in Tribal Areas adjacent to the Afghan border in Pakistan since early 2011. Both the institutions were supported by different individual donors, International Rescue Committee and FATA Development Authority. This support lasts in June 2011.

Since there was great need and requirement to train the Afghan refugee’s youth in different skills so that when they return to their country they can contribute to the rebuilding of their national. In order to work on this PEDO launched a project to train Afghan Youth (boys and girls) in these two institutes established by PEDO. PEDO launched the project on Global Giving and with generous support of more than 60 donors PEDO was able to generate $ 4000 US in a very short time. Though the funds are still not reached PEDO due to some technical reasons, but PEDO could not wait for the funds arrival and we started the project activities by ensuring funds from our endowment fund and credit by local vendors and technical instructors.

 Progress 15 March to 15 July, 2012:

1.   Women Skill Development Centre:

First Batch of Afghan Refugee Girls Completed their Course:

First batch of 20 Afghan Refugee girls/women completed their 6 months certificate course in PEDO’s Women Skill Development Centre in Tribal Area Village Pas Kalay Meena Khel, Jamrod, Khyber Agency. The course was started from 1st January, 2012 and ended on 30th June, 2012 with an internal examination and certificate distribution among all students. All 20 Afghan Refugee girls/women successfully completed their course and learned the skill of cutting, sewing, embroidery and decoration pieces making.

Women Entrepreneurship Skills Development:

In the first week of July, 2012 PEDO Director Mr. Muhib Ullah Khan held a meeting with Miss Nabeela Farman, Project Manager, Women Business Development Centre Peshawar to help these Afghan Refugee girls / women to learn the entrepreneurship skills. Miss Nabeela shared that these Afghan women can become part of their project by participating different trainings and exposure. Women Business Development Centre provide product display facilities at very low cost, hence help the women to market their products.

Admissions for Second Batch in Women Skill Development Centre:

Admission for 2nd batch has been started and so far 22 Afghan Refugee Girls/Women have been enrolled. The second batch class will start after Eid Holidays in early September, 2012.

2.  HYTEC Institute of Technology (A project of PEDO):

The first batch 15 Afghan Youth trainees had successfully completed their course in the trade of Electrician in March, 2012. Since, there was high demand for Para Medical Courses in Afghanistan. PEDO initiated the 2nd batch training of Nursing for Afghan Refugee Youth. The 6 months course has been started since April 2012, where 20 students have been enrolled including 12 boys and 8 girls. PEDO is facilitating this training course in Akbar Medical Centre.

Cost of the Course:

The cost of this course is Rs. 20000/- per student. Since, PEDO has not received funds from Global Giving so far, Akbar Medical Centre is facilitating these courses on credit basis. Once we receive the funds PEDO will pay Akbar Medical Centre the course fee for all 20 Afghan Refugee Youth. The course will end in September, 2012.

Technical Trades:

PEDO has successfully completed 3 months electrician trade course for 15 Afghan Refugee Youth. Since due to shortage of funds PEDO is unable to continue this course. But once we start receiving funds from Global Giving PEDO will restart the course as there is huge demand for technical courses.

PEDO team is highly thankful to its donors, whose generous support helped PEDO to get this success. PEDO is hopeful to get its aims and objective of the project through constant support of its donors. PEDO also welcome all suggestions for improvement.
