Train 300 rural women on women's rights in Nigeria

by Friends of Humanity

In Nigeria, women are often unaware of their rights, and therefore do not enjoy them. Nigerian women are vulnerable to cultural, religious and juridical factors that place them in a subordinate position to men. As a result, marginalization, stereotyping and trivialization of women are glaring aspects of Nigerian society. Adequate training on women's rights will enable women to become more aware of their rights and to strengthen their socio-economic capability and status.

In Nigeria, women face discrimination in all sectors of society (education, employment, entrepreneurship). Even today, tradition, culture, law, religion, and other factors continue to widen the gap between women and men. Moreover, in rural areas, women constitute the majority of the work force and produce most of the food consumed. With equal access to loans, land, and education, their contribution to their communities could be vastly improved.

The project aims at training 300 rural women on women's rights. It will provide them with the essential knowledge of the human rights to which they are entitled. The program includes the following activities: women's rights awareness, education, and training, communication training, and training for women who will subsequently offer the program in their own communities.

Long-Term Impact

Training 300 rural women on women's rights will allow them to have a better knowledge of their rights. With knowledge, women will be better able to protect themselves against violence and to fight against women's rights violations. The training will provide women with empowerment. In the long term, we expect this project to serve as an example to be replicated at the national level. We hope this project will promote women's rights issues.
