Illiteracy is one major obstacle to involvement of rural Liberians in decision making that affect their lives. They lack information on their rights and responsibilities, which inhibit their role in building peace and democracy. Women and youth are most vulnerable and will be main target of this project. Project will train community volunteers, provide training materials, and pay stipend for volunteers, who will in turn train residents - a community based intervention.

Conduct literacy training in 30 communities, with 150 learners over 10 month period. Carry out civic forums to educate 150 residents in democracy, human rights, and peace building.

Long-Term Impact

Women will regain self confidence, dignity, have greater chances for improved income, promote education and good health for their families and communities; Will participate more in decision making, voting and making positive changes in Liberia.
