The project will upgrade provider's skills to help women in Bafut learn the benefits of spacing children through family planning and the effects of HIV/AIDs. The providers will also provide basic emergency care and also treat minor complications that can threaten the life of a mother and her baby.
In Bafut women aren't empowered to use contraception because of lack of access to trained providers. They lack reliable information about how to protect their health and what to do in an emergency situation. The consequences are indecision, delays, and failure to take appropriate action - all contributing to avoidable suffering and death. Many women lack access to information on FP and contraceptive methods to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortion.
We will train providers to help women learn the benefits of Family Planning (FP) and also teach them on how to provide basic emergency care and give them the tools to treat minor complications that can threaten the life of a mother and her baby. In collaboration with the Vitamin Angels in the USA, we will provide pregnant and breastfeeding mothers with multivitamin, provide children with vitamin A 100,000/200,000 IU and Albendazole for deworming.
We will train 1500 providers and give them the tools to help women avoid about 25 % of unintended and closely spaced pregnancies that can be linked to increased risk of unsafe abortion. We will also educate 7500 women on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding that brings tremendous nutritional benefits to newborns and infants and prevent unwanted pregnancy among postpartum women for 6 months, before transitioning to another modern method.
