We CAN Abolish Nuclear Weapons

Event Participants at the Kazakhstan Mission to UN
Event Participants at the Kazakhstan Mission to UN

Dear Friends,

The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation has been busy advocating for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and working towards its full implementation. Here are just some of the examples of what we have been doing over the past few months:

Promoting the TPNW:

We participated and organized multiple events promoting the TPNW. One such event, “From the Pacific to the Steppes: Engaging with Frontline Communities on the TPNW,” took place on January 18 at the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan in New York, featuring Ambassador Akan Rakhmetullin of Kazakhstan, Josephine Moote, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Kiribati, Benetick Kabua Maddison of MEI, Dr. Togzhan Kassenova, Senior Fellow with the Project on International Security, Commerce, and Economic Statecraft (PISCES) at the Center for Policy Research, SUNY-Albany, Veronique Christory, ICRC’s Senior Arms Adviser to the UN, and myself. The gathering was simultaneously a celebration of the second anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and an opportunity to discuss the treaty’s promises and its future, particularly as they pertain to affected communities. A link to read about the event and watch the recording is on our website (click on the first link that leads to the Latest from NAPF).

An article I wrote about the necessity of nuclear abolition was published by Truthout, garnering a great deal of attention on social media and otherwise. See the link to the article below.

Following the one-year anniversary of the start of the Ukraine War, we held a Nuclear Dangers virtual event with Noam Chomsky, Daniel Ellsberg, Richard Falk, and Cynthia Lazaroff. We were thrilled to hear from these intellectual giants on the necessity for peace and nuclear abolition. Link to the recording of the event is also included below (and can be found under the Latest from NAPF, as well).

Implementing the TPNW:

We have been working on implementation of the TPNW, as part of the working group on Articles 6 and 7, consulting with diplomats, civil society, and representatives of affected communities on making the humanitarian provisions of the treaty a reality. This work is a critical step in preparing for the Second Meeting of States Parties, which will take place at the end of the year at the UN in New York. Currently, we are working on organizing a Congressional briefing on these issues, to enlist support for these efforts from US legislators. In addition, I was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Group to the TPNW. You can read about this group and my appointment on our website (under the Latest from NAPF).

We are grateful for the support of people around the world, who recognize that we must abolish nuclear weapons before they abolish us! The TPNW is our best hope for a world free of nuclear weapons and we will continue to work tirelessly to see that it achieves all of its objectives. Your generosity makes this work possible and for that, we are enormously appreciative.

Most warmly,

Ivana
