The Government of Kenya introduced Free Primary Education in 2003, this resulting into a rapid increase in the number of children in public schools, placing severe strain on the school infrastructure / facilities that were already inadequate. Today we have a shortfall of over 210,000 latrines/toilets in schools country wide. Spark a Life supports interventions in supporting Public Primary Schools with the Construction of Sanitation Facilities, Classrooms and Conducting sanitation awareness
There is a shortfall of over 210,000 latrines/toilets in Kenya's Public Primary Schools.Long queues at the toilets wastes learning time, girls deliberately miss school during their menses, toilets are mostly shared between boys and girls. Most toilets are in a poor hygienic condition, temporary structures not well constructed. Several structures have collapsed, killing/hurting students. Many existing Structures condemned by the Public Health Department.
Supporting schools to construct latrines will reduce the children per door ratio for the latrines, reducing the time wasted on queues, improving access to education especially for girls, reducing the prevalence of sanitation related diseases/deaths. Conducting of Sanitation & Hygiene Awareness will Sensitize and Empower the communities on the need/importance of good sanitation/hygiene
Improved access to functional latrines in Public Primary Schools for both boys and girls, Reduced sanitation related illnesses (diarrhea/ water borne diseases) in schools, Improved school performance as time wasted on latrine queues/ treatment sanitation related ailments will be reduced. Improved school attendance especially for girls
