According to official figures, it is estimated that there are more than 50,000 people in Colombia infected with HIV who have not yet been diagnosed. That is, four out of ten people do not know their own diagnosis. Governmental efforts are insufficient to effectively combat HIV/AIDS. However, services provided by the community itself in Sexual Health and prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, have shown great effectiveness with minimal funding.
Red Somos, through its community-based Sexual Health services, strengthens the global response to HIV/AIDS. It has been proven that a person who is diagnosed on time, has a better chance of surviving, gets lower charges of the virus in their body and significantly reduces the possibility of transmitting the virus. "Together we say NO to HIV", seeks to enable people with HIV to learn their diagnosis and to empower themselves to fight stigma and discrimination associated with the disease.
Red Somos reaches people who do not regularly use health systems. For this reason, we encourage them to be tested and accompany them to join the Colombian governments HIV/AIDS program. The work done by and within the community complements the official health systems. This way, we generate, more friendly, respectful and inclusive services and a more positive environment, that reduces the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.
