After an awesome six-week summer program, New Community for Children opened our doors for the 2013-2014 school year this past Monday, August 26th! This summer’s ‘Read with Me, Learn with Me’ theme was a major success, so we are working hard to carry that success into the school year by launching great literacy focused programming that is sure to keep the progress going!
Our Literacy Plus initiative will allow each student to spend time with a Literacy Coach who will assess their reading skills and design programming that supports the strengths and combats the areas of concern for each student. Our middle school students will participate in book clubs where they will choose the books their group reads and complete activities that demonstrate their reading comprehension skills. As you can see, literacy is key at NCFC!
This is going to be an exciting school year at New Community for Children! We welcome visitors and friends to our regular Kids in Motion tours so that you can see firsthand all the wonderful things happening at NCFC. Our one-hour tours take place twice monthly. As another great school year comes to a close, New Community for Children is still in work mode, preparing for our summer program. For 6 weeks this summer, we will have 75 kids on site from 8:00 am - 6:00 pm Monday through Friday! Our theme for this summer is 'Read with Me, Learn with Me' which supports our focus on literacy by encouring families and the community to take an active role in helping our students become better and more enthusiastic readers.
Our students will be emersed in acadmically and socially enriching programming such as daily classroom instruction, karate, art, photography, and gardening. The most exciting component for the summer is the Community Literacy Project. This component will allow students to produce short video segments to share what books they're reading, book reviews and what they're learning this summer at NCFC. The videos will be shared with their families, friends and other kids in their community!
This is going to be an exciting summer at New Community for Children! We welcome visitors and friends to our regular Kids in Motion tours so that . Our one-hour tours take place twice monthly. South African Educators Visit NCFC!
By Reshena Johnson | Development/Operations Coordinator

Our new friends from Pretoria, South Africa!
On Monday this week, New Community for Children hosted visitors from Dimakatso Primary school in Pretoria, South Africa. Robby Chauke, Principal of the school, came along with four teachers to see New Community for Children in action. The group is on a tour of Washington, DC, Chicago and New York to see best practices in out of school time.
During their visit the teachers were excited to learn more about the social enrichment activities offered along with academic support. One noted that at Dimakatso Primary school the after school program provides only tutoring but now she will incorporate more fun options to keep kids engaged. We were happy to host our international visitors and showcase our best!
At New Community for Children, we welcome visitors from near and far to our regular Kids in Motion tours. Our one-hour tours take place twice a month from 4:30PM - 5:30PM. To RSVP to one of the tours listed below or schedule a private group tour, please email rjohnson@ncfc-dc.org.
