The project aims at getting girls into school and ensuring safe and effective environment which can keep girls of 10 to 20 years old in school. It seeks to prevent and provide awareness on the dangers of child marriages, early pregnancies, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, and children's rights to girls, teachers, parents and the community. Those who were impregnated and have delivered will be encouraged to get back to school. The project will support 11000 girls in11 districts across the country
50% of young girls in Malawi are married before the age of 18 years some as early as 12 years old. These girls become victims of sexual abuse, trafficking and traditional practices such as 'fisi', type of formalized rape. Most families who cannot afford sending all their children to school often prioritize investing in the education of their sons over that of a girl child. Girls are also forced into transactional sex in order to earn a living. These issues threaten girls' safety and their future
We will conduct workshops with girls, parents, teachers and traditional leaders to raise awareness on the risks of early marriages, child rights and the benefits of girls' extended education. Teachers will be enlightened on how they can address denial and discrimination against girls by enforcing appropriate policies and practices in schools. Will provide school basic necessities such as uniforms to needy students. We will set up hotline and girl parallegal network where to report any abuses
The project will benefit 11000 girls, parents, teachers and traditional leaders by creating awareness about the danger of early child marriages and the benefits of girls' extended education. This will retain more girls in school. We believe that an educated girl has high earning potential, enjoys good health, she is less likely to marry as a teenager, has fewer children, less likely to be a victim of gender based violence, more likely to educate her children and be productive to the society.
