Challenge

Save the Children data shows, Nigeria has an estimated 32 million people with disabilities, most of whom are children. UNICEF, government and other actors support disability interventions but children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) are not meaningfully included. The cost of raising a child with CP is expensive. Access to support services such as rehabilitation, therapy, mental health is limited and affects their quality of life. The project will impact over 50 children with CP and 50 parents.

Solution

The project provides early intervention respite, care and physiotherapy to mitigate the impact of Cerebral Palsy. The care entails residence care, rehabilitation therapy for 50 children of indigent families without these service, these children are at risk of either being buried alive or drowned due to the challenge of providing care services. 50 Parents will also be trained to provide basic home based therapy and care givers will be empowered to support residence care for these children.

Long-Term Impact

The provision of quality and timely care services will enhance the quality of life for 50 children with Cerebral Palsy. It will further mitigate the physiological and financial strain on 50 indigent parents who cannot afford these services. The project will indirectly impact over 300 families. The project will further set the standard for mainstreaming the perspectives of these children with Cerebral Palsy in interventions by International NGOs, Government and other development actors .
