The Dougy Center Grief Support Groups

By Cheri Lethin | Development Director

Through our fundraising efforts,The Dougy Center is able to provide a safe place for children, teens, young adults and their family members who are grieving a death. We never charge families a fee and receive no government support, making donations especially important and greatly appreciated. The cost to sponsor a child, teen, or young adult in our peer support program is $1,500 per year. Funds raised for this project will help to cover the cost of child sponsorships, facility rentals, M&M candies, snacks, art supplies, candles for remembrance ceremonies, printer paper and more.

The Dougy Center serves 400 children, teens and young adults, and 250 family members each month.  According to U.S. Census data, approximately 19,000 children in the Portland Metro area could benefit from The Dougy Center services.

Our fall fundraiser, the Friends of The Dougy Center Annual Fall Event was held on Tuesday, November 13th at The Governor Hotel in downtown Portland, OR. Thanks to our generous supporters, we raised almost $50,000 to support grieving children and families in this community.

Tickets are on sale for our Porsche Boxster drawing.  2000 tickets will be sold with the drawing for the car to be held on Friday, May 10th at the Portland Art Museum.

The construction of the new Dougy Center home is nearly complete!  We will hold our peer support groups in the new facility beginning in January 2013!

Recently The Dougy Center and our model of peer support for grieving children was recognized by the New York Times and NPR as part of a national trend.  This recent media attention underscores the importance of The Dougy Center’s mission, and of our work with grieving children, teens, young adults and their parents.  For more information visit www.dougy.org.
