We are thrilled to welcome families into our newly rebuilt home this month for peer support groups. The home was designed from the ground up to meet the needs of the grieving children and families in our program. It includes circular meeting rooms and interactive playrooms, such as the Volcano Room, the Art Room, the Music Room and the Sand Table Room. This is an exciting time for our organization, and we were excited to open our new home to the public on February 2nd, 2013. Over 750 people joined us for refreshments and tours of the new building during
our Grand Opening Celebration the weekend of February 1st and 2nd. The home was filled with generous supporters, current participating families, neighbors, past participants, volunteers, community leaders and scores of excited children. The celebration received coverage from every local news outlet and we could not be more pleased with the result of our efforts.
The Dougy Center provides a safe place for children, teens, young adults and their family members who are grieving a death. We never charge families a fee and receive no government support, making donations especially important and greatly appreciated. The cost to sponsor a child, teen, or young adult in our peer support program is $1,500 per year. Funds raised for this project will help to cover the cost of child sponsorships, facility rentals, M&M candies, snacks, art supplies, candles for remembrance ceremonies, printer paper and more.
The Dougy Center serves 400 children, teens and young adults, and 250 family members each month. According
to U.S. Census data, approximately 19,000 children in the Portland Metro area could benefit from The Dougy Center services.
