Send 50 Girls to School in Domasi, Zomba Malawi

by Children's Hope Malawi

The 50 Girl Education Project is an innovative and holistic intervention to enroll and keep the most vulnerable girls, from Mtogolo Village in Domasi, in school. In this pilot program, we aim to support the futures of 50 grade school girls who are most at risk of early marriage and other harmful circumstances of poverty to a state of being exposed to a broader education-based life enhancing activities within one year. Close monitoring and evaluation of staff and students will ensure continuity.

total goal

Like many rural areas in Malawi, Mtogolo village (about 25,000 people) suffers from a high incidence of poverty that, if not addressed in a systematic manner, would be passed from generation to generation. Young girls are in particular risk for early forced marriages, labour and pregnancies to alleviate families from poverty. This program aims to provide an integrated support strategy to provide quality education anda community-based framework to encourage families to keep girls in school.

This project promotes civic education and community sensitization to address the causes of poor school attendance. Our infrastructure within our NGO promotes coordination with Malawi Departments of Health and Education to change the mindset of the community. By providing counseling and poverty alleviation to families, we will encourage social change through an integrated approach to improve learning conditions for all students, whilst focusing on keeping the most vulnerable girls in school.

Long-Term Impact

Our primary objective is to keep young girls safe from early marriage and pregnancy. We strongly believe that the entire community can rally behind girl empowerment if they are given proper resources to address systemic poverty and the stifling economic conditions that fuel poor attendance in school. By supporting 50 girls, we intend that this pilot project will sustain itself through a 5-year funded project that aims to fully eradicate early labour and child marriage.
