The warm Tuesday afternoon of November 29 witnessed the fun launching of the Aflatoun Program in Pusok Elementary School in Lapu-lapu City, Cebu, joined by 290 pupils, teachers, and parents. The exciting faces of children were an inspiring sight as they formally opened the Aflatoun Child Social and Financial Education Program in their school. In the morning, the pupils were given the chance to hone their talents in drawing for the poster-making contest with the theme focused on their understanding about Savings and Spending. The most awaited part of the program was the opening of the first savings account of the pupils. For as low as twenty pesos or half a dollar, they had opened their savings account with individual passbooks. The concept of savings was first introduced to the children through the integration of the financial literacy topics in the different subject areas like Math, Home Economics, and Character Education. The teachers of the school had been trained about social and financial education and are expected to share the concept to the children.
The parents were also proud and happy for such an opportunity. They said that during their time, they did not have that same avenue where they can save for such a small amount in a convenient and child-friendly way. The savings of the pupils are safe and secure as it is being managed by the local credit union.
