Sumaira, an HDF Alumni and Teacher

Sumaira Hayyat is an ambitious 20-year-old. She hails from a small village, Hardo Jabbo located in the outskirts of Lahore. She enjoys a full house of ten siblings: 4 brothers and 6 sisters. Her father, the main breadwinner of the family, is a laborer with a monthly income of approximately $100 per month.

Sumaira is one of the few girls in her village to have completed matriculation. She is an alumni of HDF's school Enoo Bhatti, located in Lahore, and is now teaching at an HDF community school for girls in her village. She is in the pursuit of continuing onto higher education, and her job is allowing her to save up for that.

This academically driven young woman believes that life is worthless without an education. Sumaira wants to promote girls' education in her village. “School was always the happiest time of my life. My schooling has shown me the meaning of my existence and gave my life a purpose,” says the 20 year-old smiling with pride at her achievements.

HDF schools champion girl’s education all around Pakistan. Through primary and secondary schooling, HDF ensures that girls are motivated to climb up the stairs of higher education, enter entrepreneurial ventures, voice their opinions, demand equal rights, and actively participate in decision-making processes that affects their families and communities.
