Enrolling Students: Impacting a Community

By Zainab Khan | Development Manager

HDF School in Zhob, Pakistan
HDF School in Zhob, Pakistan

HDF is running more than 25 formal and non-formal schools in the province of Balochistan, located in southwest Pakistan. Balochistan has the least number of educational institutions, and ranks as the lowest literacy rate among both males and females. Climate is harsh, and temperature fluctuation is extreme. It is the largest province by area, constituting approximately 44% of Pakistan's total land mass, yet it is the least populated region.

One HDF school is being run is Nasirabad, a small village in Zhob, the northernmost district in the Balochistan province. There are more than 200 girls studying at the school and receiving an education they would otherwise have no access to. The school initially only offered classes up to grade 5; however, this was extended to 8th grade after HDF was able to generate significant interest in the local community and launched an extensive student enrollment campaign.

HDF emphasizes the importance of education through its Social Mobilization program, and then implements the Education & Literacy program by establishing schools specifically for marginalized populations. The girls enrolled in this school and their families have broken from traditional norms and have set an example for others in their village to follow; thus, diffusing change within the entire community.
