Summary

This project opens up an enchanting outdoor portal to the children of the South Bronx growing up amidst the highest rates of asthma, diabetes, and poverty. Through rock climbing, hiking, and camping, children and their families grow in trust, responsibility, and self-acceptance. Once home we proceed to green the Bronx and spread the seeds of justice.

Challenge

Our children and their families who join our free summer camp live in Mott Haven, Bronx that has one of the highest rates of asthma, diabetes and poverty in the country. Our campers understand the impact of pollution and environmental destruction firsthand.

Solution

The camp offers free tuition, use of camp equipment, as well as free organic lunch and snacks, and all meals included for the camping trip. Through rock climbing, hiking, & camping children and their family grow in trust, responsibility, and self-acceptance.

Long-Term Impact

18 children and their families are empowered to become the next generation of environmental leaders by fostering a deep love of the outdoors. The camp employs a community designed program that encourages personal confidence, leadership, social and environmental skills through outdoor play and adventure. Coming home we proceed to green the Bronx and spread the seeds of justice.
