Syrian Education Library Network

Syrian Education Library Network

OLE is building a Syrian Education Library Network, an online repository of open education resources appropriate for Syrian adolescents and young adults. An international consortium of organizations that provide learning opportunities for young Syrians will contribute resources and benefit from the initiative, although the repository will be publicly available to all under a Creative Commons license. To date OLE has raised USD 60K from the NOKIA Foundation and private donors towards a 250K goal.

Now in its sixth year, the conflict in Syria continues unabated. In that time more than 12 million people have been displaced. 5 million Syrian refugees are living in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, and Iraq. In the host countries school systems have been stretched beyond capacity. UNICEF estimates that 2 million Syrian children aged 6 - 18 are not in school. After shelter, food, and health, access to meaningful quality education is perhaps the greatest challenges facing Syrian refugees.

OLE will build a Syrian Education Library Network (SELN) to increase access to educational resources for Syrian adolescents and young adults. The SELN will serve as a centralized repository of free learning resources shared by organizations around the world. Although the SELN will be accessible by anyone, the primary beneficiaries will be organizations able to curate, share, access and download content to local libraries. The SELN will be developed using OLE's existing PLANET software.

Long-Term Impact

The creation of the SELN will result in increased capacity for organizations that provide young Syrians with learning opportunities by providing access to a wide selection of Arabic and second language learning resources, as well as the increasing ability of individuals to access learning resources that fit their needs, reducing the aggregate cost of content creation and collection, and demonstrating the effectiveness of library networks that can be used with other segments of the population.
