The community that Vimukti caters to is either so poor that they cannot afford two proper meals for their daughters or they do not wish to spend money on girls. The girls when they first arrive in school; their clothes are old, dirty and torn. The school distributes one set of uniform, shoes & winter clothes to all the students every year. Sweaters are essential or else the girls will fall sick and not attend school.
Slums of Jaipur suffer from many socio-economic problems which are intensified by the continued migration of poor families from rural areas. Poor health & sanitation, high alcoholism & drug abuse among men resulting in crime against women make women's & girls' life miserable. Discrimination against young girls is embedded in culture & reinforced by poverty. Poverty-stricken parents keep the girls at home to watch over siblings or involve them in low skill tasks for minimal income generation
Vimukti Sanstha has identified education & vocational training as means to empower girls living in Jaipur slums. It provides completely free education-we don't charge any fee & we provide free books /uniforms /stationary /light meals. These things are provided as parents are either not capable or not willing to spend money on these things for their girls. If Vimukti will not provide these, the girls will not come to school and we will not be able to accomplish our mission of empowering girls.
Providing free uniforms and other things reduces the financial burden of the parents and their objections to girls' education is minimum. For many girls, the uniform including sweaters provided by the school are the only clothes they have. Without sweaters, they will not be able to attend school regularly in winters. Thus, in order to maintain continuity of education and for the girls to stay healthy and not fall sick, Vimukti provides sweaters to all the students.
