Congo Basin: The Lungs of Africa

By Robin Fostel | Project Leader

The Congo Basin’s ancient, sprawling network of rivers and forests is often called the lungs of Africa—because it sends a massive amount of vital oxygen into the atmosphere, while trapping harmful greenhouse gases.

But the rapid expansion of mining and agriculture industries has put the fragile Congo Basin on life support, contributing to a staggering two-fold increase in deforestation in the region over the last two decades.

We can’t let industry—intent on plundering the Congo Basin’s natural riches at any cost—destroy this iconic forest.

Home to the second largest tropical rainforest on our planet and spanning eight countries, the Congo Basinoverflows with abundant wildlife: More than 10,000 species of plants, mammals, fish, and birds inhabit this verdant paradise.

But the Congo Basin’s benefits extend far beyond Central Africa—they reach every corner of our planet. The millions of square miles of dense rainforest trap harmful greenhouse gasses that would otherwise invade the atmosphere and cause global temperatures to rise.

With catastrophic weather patterns, rising global temperatures, and other troubling symptoms of climate change growing more evident by the day, the need to protect forests has never been clearer.

Thank you for your support in 2018.
